What is your pen name?
Katherine H. Brown
What genre do you write in? Why do you love it?
I write cozy mysteries mostly. It is my favorite genre to read in and I’ve been swept away by so many fantastic authors that it only made sense to manufacture my own mysteries next. I also enjoy writing witty and sarcastic characters.
How many books have you published?
I’ve published 6 cozy mysteries, 2 cozy novellas, a few other short stories, 5 elementary age books, and recently 1 middle grade novella. I’m finishing up the finale to one of my cozy mystery series right now.
What inspired you to become a writer?
A love of books, obsession with reading, and a vast enjoyment of putting words together to create something brand new.
What is your indie success story?
All of my earnings, little though they are at this point, have either gone back into books or to help pay my Amazon shopping. I haven’t actually hit a “profit” over my expenses yet, but in 2020 I was within $200 of breaking even and that is very exciting for me!
What is the best piece of self-publishing advice that you’ve ever received?
Write the next book. It’s true. If you write an entertaining story, the best way to capitalize on that success is to continue writing.
Anything else fun or notable that you would like to share about yourself?
I love Blue Bell Chocolate Chip ice cream, but for some terribly frustrating reason they make it a seasonal flavor and I can never find it at our Walmart. I’m going to be writing a lot of shorter novella style series this year due to being a stay-at-home mom to a one-year-old (as of April 3rd) tornado of energy. That being said, I think shorter stories will really help bring a conciseness to my writing that has been missing and I’m excited to see where the year takes me.
What are you working on right now?
I’m usually working on more than one thing, so as a general rundown: Finishing and or marketing White Chocolate, Weapons, & a Walk Down the Aisle (Book 5 in the Ooey Gooey Bakery Cozy Mystery series); finishing a fun novel that involves libraries and Ireland which has eluded completion for several years now, and a sequel to my middle-grade novella about a junior high student named Becky.

Finding a cover designer is hard work.
Not only do you have to find designers that design for your genre, but you also have to vet them to make sure they are professional, you have to make sure they aren’t booked out.
You need to go to different websites, Facebook groups, and Instagram accounts to compare their work with other designers. OR you go to sites like Reedsy, and when you search for someone in your genre, it only yields a single designer. (Yes, this is the case for cozy mystery.) It’s sometimes like looking for a needle in a haystack.
